What is a food allergy?

A food allergy is an abnormal response that the body has when a particular food is consumed. The allergy causes the immune system to respond. The immune system responds with the IgE antibodies. These antibodies react with the food causing histamines to be released, which then causes the person to experience reactions such as hives, trouble breathing/asthma, stomach pains, itching of the mouth and/or throat, and many more serious reactions ranging from uncomfortably to life threatening anaphylaxis. Therefore, it is important to know of any food allergies you or your children may have, and the extent of the allergy!

Trick or Trigger?

This time of year can be exciting, spooky, and delightful for children! For parents of kids with serious food allergies can be very concerning. Common ingredients in packaged candies include peanuts, eggs, wheat, or milk. These ingredients are among the top foods that cause allergic reactions in children. Some companies do not necessarily use these ingredients in their candies but could be cross contaminated in the process of being made and packaged.
