Healthy, Allergen-Free Summer Snack Alternatives

Looking for some sizzling allergen-free summer snack alternatives? We've got them right here!

With summer just around the corner, we can’t help but be excited for all of the tasty summer treats headed our way! Think about it: creamy soft serve by the pool, juicy cheeseburgers at summer BBQs, and melted S’mores at late-night campfires. While we all love spending time with our friends and family in the summer sun, those in the allergen-free community may dread these fun summer festivities since many of these tasty treats simply don’t fit their dietary needs. We’re here to provide you with 3 healthy, allergen-free alternatives to classic summer favorites:

1.Swap Ice Cream with Banana Nice Cream

We get it - you need a treat to cool you down without the dairy. Lucky for you, frozen bananas nearly replicate the texture and creaminess of soft serve. Just 1 ingredient (bananas) can replace calorically-dense, additive-filled ice cream.

Here’s how to make it: Buy bananas. Let them ripen. Unpeel bananas. Place bananas in an airtight container. Freeze them. Toss fully frozen bananas into blender. Blend until the consistency resembles soft serve. That’s it!

Banana Nice Cream is delicious on its own, but it’s also a great base for healthy toppings. Some of our favorite allergy-free toppings include fresh fruit, gluten-free granola, dairy-free chocolate chips, and, even a drizzle of sunflower seed butter!

2. Suns Out = Buns Out

Grilling is a summer staple as it’s a great way to enjoy the warm weather, and while many things can be grilled, the vast majority of grill foods go immediately from grill to bun, which of course poses a problem for those looking to avoid gluten.

Though gluten-free buns certainly exist, we suggest simply ditching the bun entirely, which also lowers carbohydrate intake. Luckily, it’s become socially acceptable to go completely bunless, but for those still wanting some type of vessel for their grilled protein or veggie burger, lettuce wraps serve as the perfect fresh, delicious, and healthy alternative to buns.

3. S’mores

While S’mores aren’t the healthiest treat, they are certainly delicious and our cravings deserve some satisfaction from time to time!

There are a few different ways to replicate this summer classic. You could simply buy allergen-free graham crackers & dairy-free chocolate to create a near replica of the traditional treat. Those looking to get a bit more creative, however, could roast a marshmallow before topping it with a That’s it Truffle– think of it like a gourmet fruit and chocolate S’mores skewer.

Gone are the days of lackluster allergen-free foods. With a little creativity, nearly every classic summer treat can be easily tailored to fit your personal dietary needs, and with these three delicious alternatives, you’ll be sure to have everyone at the pool party envying your allergen free creations!
